Now our newest silkscreen-project „Wolke über Hanami“ - nine drawings in response to the Fukushima disaster, inspired by a haiku of C. Pom - is published.

Printed in three colors by Olli Nerlich (Kreuzberg) and carefully bound by Cris Grieser (Prenzlberg). Available as an oversized poster (in size 70 x 100 cm) or as a leporello book (20 x 28 cm).

Thanks to all involved artists - to Leen van Hulst, Frederik Jurk, Ib Jorn, Cleo Schwinkowski, Boris Servais, C. Pom, Benedikt Rohlmann and Eva Maria Werner.

Good-for-Nothing

Eichendorff one of the famous german poets of the Romantic wrote 1822/23 the novella "Life of a good-for-nothing". The poems contained in his narrative poem have been melodized by Robert and Clara Schumann. As German hiking songs they

became world-famous.

These illustrations belong to my contribution for the next produced limited edition of the 000x magazine 0020.

Wearing my Finnish striped Marimekko T-shirt, I could touch my printed comic book last Friday ! :)

Melk & sneeuw tells a story about Finland and about unpossible love.

I'm very glad with the result. Especially with the better lay-out of the book. Thank's to Dieter Jüdt for the help and tips he gave concerning the lay-out and also to encourage me to keep looking for a publisher! :)

My dear friends and collegues,

it is really quite a while since I posted something in our blog, especially because I started using the computer more and more for my artwork. With the bookfair comming up, I thought I could contribute some pictures of the work that I have done for our collective.

This here is my work for the WOLKE ÜBER HANAMI project. As You may notice, the drawings are digitaly done for the most parts. Using a graphic tablet. Quite a changeover in my workingprincibles. But I really dig it now. Coolbeans.

DAS SCHWARZE SCHAF - artist book

This little artist book was made for the book object box "Dem Bär gefällt's" - project published by the NEUES KUNSTHAUS AHRENSHOOP. The short poem from Christoph Kuhn inspired me to this special Original Graphic Book Design for children. (Size 11x11cm, technique linocut). The edition will be shown
at the Book Fair in Frankfurt. You can also visit the exhibition "Das Künstlerbuch VI" starting from the 30'th September until the 4'th December in the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel.

Zen Bubbles

Hi there!

I thought the upcoming Frankfurt Book Fair, which we will

attend again this year (of course!) would be the perfect time

to unveal my new book project which is still in its

very early, delicate inception stage. I just finished

my new promo postcard celebrating my decision to go

with this topic. It will also be my diploma.

There are a great many books about meditation, many of

which are great introductions into the matter, my favourite being

Whereever You Go, There You Are

by the incredible Jon Kabat-Zinn, but I decided

to go ahead and form my own version of how to present

these concepts and wrap them into a nice package

of (hopefully) pretty little pictures.

It is by no means pretending to be a
be-all, end-all guide on meditation,

but a light-hearted, easy-going, hand-holding introduction.

(It helps that I´ve started doing meditation only a couple of

months ago, so I still have a fresh new view on what it feels

like to start with it.)

I´ve also vastly changed my website, which includes

first and foremost all the new editorial stuff I´ve been

busy with in the past few months.

I spend a few days seeing a friend, walking in the Tauber valley and crossing the vineyards near Würzburg. The drawing will be published in a short booklet which opens a new series of travelbooks.

It's such a fine feeling to be on the road again. I'd like to travel much more than work allows me.

The Transfiguration of 9/11

The TAZ asked me to make an illustration for the frontpage of their special issue dedicated the anniversary of 9/11. I started with some sketches. One idea was to visualize a weapon-fair booth, decorated with wreckage of the twin tower buildings. The second one (which I prefered) was a kind of „pop-art visualization“. We decided to work on this idea...

... and I did a pencil drawing mixed with some photocopied parts. The drawing should not only treat the remembering of the 9/11 event,...

..but also the new developements in weapons technology and face recognation (the USA produced a new combat aircraft called „Raptor“ and very spacy lookin anti-aircraft-aeroplanes in the last years).

Only some hours before printing the size of the (now colored) illustration changed from portrait to landscape. But during all modifications the image still keeps its fine pop-art-appeal.

A new publication

Now out is a publication including my new pencil drawings, titled „L‘invitation au voyage“. This 16paged artistbook was inspired by a short story with the same title of „poéte maudit“ Charles Baudelaire, selected from his book „Le spleen de Paris“.

Printed on heavy paper (200 g), carefully handbound and limited on 25 copies. Available at the current exhibition at gallery erstererster , Berlin, and at our Poste Aérienne booth, this October at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

This is one of my favourite quotations of Baudelaire, the poet who identifies himself with the tragic albatross.
The graphic was made for our exhibition „Poete maudit“ in Berlin. It is such a great theme like Dieter and Ib said. Special thanks and greetings to Andreas Rauth!

L‘Invitation au voyage

Four new pieces in a new technique. The use of fineliner, a smooth pencil in 6 B and some Polychromos color pencils in different grey tones allows me to work in a rather „documentary style“. I was also influenced by faded Polaroids and the more conceptual work of Robert Weaver.

These four drawings belong to a series of all in all seven images titled „L‘Invitation au voyage“. Now you can see the complete series at the highly recommended exhibition „Poete maudit“, curated by Andreas Rauth. This tribute to Charles Baudelaire shows also very fine drawings, collages and objects by David von Bassewitz, Ib Jorn, Birgit Lang, Lorem ipsum collective, Falk Nordmann, Felix Pestemer, C.Pom, Richard Rabensaat and Andreas Rauth.

The exhibition (including performance, artist talk and reading) takes place at the gallery erstererster, Berlin, from Aug. 26th to Sept. 9th.

The Berlin Wall

50 years ago the wall was established by the GDR government. The concrete separated West- from East Germany and cut Berlin into pieces... Here are three new illustrations, done last week for the past weekend-issue of the TAZ.

By the way a great film showing some impressions of the wall and the "old" West Berlin was „Possession“ directed by Andrzej Żuławski. A weird movie starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neil, including some special effects by Carlo Rambaldi (Alien). The color scheme of my illustrations was directly influenced by Zulawskis work.

These are 3 new etchings I made last year in the printmaking atelier. The upperone shows the highway in Antwerp, close to my place, and the ones below are street views from Hong Kong, where I went last summer. Somehow interesting to see that there is not a lot of difference between those places.

000x the austrian art collective is preparing the next edition.
The title of the 19 th issue is "Beasts".

I'll take part with three motives:
The beast of Gévaudan,

Fritz Lang "M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder"
and Fritz Haarmann the beast of Hannover, who was convicted,
found guilty of 24 murders and executed 1925.

But there are still some more picture ideas for example the film of Jean Cocteau.....

Bookdesign

This week I worked on and nearly finished the bookdesign of our longtime graphic novel projekt. Now the final title will be „Das große Rauschen“ (a short textfragment of one of Verenas stories). I like this title very much because it brings an additional acoustic aspect (associating „the sound of the city“ or „the restless, never sleeping city“ etc) to our stories. The book will come in an extraordinary size, in hardcover with propably 64 pages.

The first part of my drawing for the silkscreen poster is done, it will be interpreted with a more graphic approach.

Some kind of explosion should be added, I'll see in which way it can work graphically.

The feeling of helplessness despite high technical standarts, the loss of control, are touching me and are a motivation for the image.

I'm curious about the other artists work!

I made a poster for a small festival in Borsbeek (Antwerp), that will take place in June. The herb that appear in the poster, has a special meaning for the neighbourhood where the festival will take place. The musicians will be the main act on the festival. I did again some illustrations about beauty products for the Belgian life style magazine Weekend Knack. This time it's for 'Black 03', which is part of a serie better pulished magazines. The cover is glossy and inside the magazine has heavy uncoated paper. Weekend Knack Black will be a serie of 8 magazines to collect. Each number is dedicated to a theme like fashion, living etc...

The theme of Black 03 is Beauty and Wellness.

I recently received this very nice parcel from India,

thanks to a friend who lives in Varanasi.

This allows me to introduce a new project:

Designing a series of illustrated matchbox labels.

There's lovely wooden matchboxes in India,

and as blank boxes can only be ordered in container quantities, I'll use these and just replace the label.

A Sign For Eternity

Nuclear waste stays radioactive and toxic over thousands of years. Some weeks before the Fukushima Catastrophe the TAZ asked me to design a warning sign that should be recognized and readable also in 50 000 years (now published at the past weekend issue).

I decided to work in a primitive, aboriginallike style. In my opinion human civilization and technique will ultimately come to an end in one of the next centuries. The survival in small isolated groups, on a primitve cultural level, is a rather optimistic view. Indeed much more realistic is a scenario exactly described in Cormac McCarthys highly recommended novel „The Road“. Read this!

I´ve been so busy with searching for a

good dayjob that I completely forgot to

So I´m just dumping a few of my new

pieces from late 2010, early 2011

in here for your viewing pleasure.

I´ve even started sketching more again - one thing

I´ve been really missing without realizing it. I bought this

little sketchbook with really smooth and super-thin paper,

which crinkles nicely when I fill the pages with biro pen.

Feels a bit like drawing on newspaper pages,

which I love!

Cyber Attack

Again an image for Berlin newspaper TAZ, illustrating an interview with expert Robin Geiß about so called cyber crimes.

Gosh, this job was real fun! Because working on that dtawing beamed me back in time. Straight back to endless rainy afternoons, sittin on the floor of my grandmas living room surrounded by my beloved set of colored pencils, drawing „The soldiers of the 7th U.S. Cavalry ride against the united tribes of the Plains Indians“.

In fact I did countless variations of this proven topic. I still remember the sound of the shootings, the crazy indian yelling and the smell of gunpowder. But I was always on the side of the Reds!

2011 International Year of Forests

As well with the desire for creating something space-filling and the awareness that art may be beautiful to look at, I started with several forest photos and pictures in January. These motives are stretched and flipped horizontal. At the moment the prints have a size of 150 cm. Details should be used for linocuts or just as well for silkscreens on old cracker barrels or washboards. But the second idea could not be realized before Summer.

He suffered from mean birth all his life.

Andersen's Fairy Tales were already published 1875

in Leipzig, Germany.

The collection of monsters is growing,

at the moment inspiration is coming from

old prints - tatzlwurms, harpyies and galleytrots*.

I'm now thinking about taking a look

at classical movie monsters. I don't like Godzilla

and his equals, but it would be a nice challenge

to make a humoristic interpretation.

My Computer still is in the garage. Repair shop, that is.

Befor x-mass I was double diseased at once.

I had no contact with the digital world at all except

at office, where I spend most of my time latetly.

I work for. And because my very best friends are 9 week old parents,

First of all a happy 2011! This is the year of the hare (in the chinese calendar), nevertheless I started 2011 with the drawing of another favourite animal of mine.

To celebrate the beginning of the new year german newspaper TAZ invited 20 writers and 20 artists (including also Detlev Beck, Lars Henkel, Doro Huber, Vitali Konstantinov, Rinah Lang, Henning Wagenbreth) to illuminate their special view on our present time. An optimistic view under the slogan „Schön, hier zu sein“.

In Memoriam: Don Van Vliet (1941-2010)

The enigmatic musician and artist Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart died last Fryday from complications of multiple sclerosis.

Captain Beeheart and his Magic Band drew attention in the 1960s with their special mixture of free jazz, psychedelia, delta blues and rock & roll combined with odd rhythms and absurdist lyrics. 1969 saw the release of the Captains best known album, Trout Mask Replica, which was produced by his childhood friend Frank Zappa, today regarded as a groundbreaking art-rock masterpiece. His music has always been more influential - especially on punk and new wave - than popular. At the early 80‘s Van Vliet retired from performing to devote himself to painting and drawing

Light Eaters and Pidgin German - mare #83

Does anyone knew that the southpacific island of Samoa was part of the former german empire? Indeed! At the beginning of the 20th century, the Mount Kilimanjaro, the big Victoria Sea, the diamant mines of today Southwest Africa, some smaller landscapes around chinese town Tsingtau and a big part of New Guinea belonged to the kingdom of the bizarre Wilhelm II. The history of german colonies came abruptly to an end with World War I.

The December issue of mare-magazin, # 83, takes a closer look on some special items of this part of german history. Very exiting is the story of early german dropouts, based on the idyllic island Kabakon. There, the disciples around charismatic franconian pharmacist August Engelhardt decided exclusively to feed on coconuts. But their last and ultimative aim was to abstain any earthly food and live only on the absorption of light!

Almost lost and forgotten are some special colonial language variations - the mixture of German with native african speech and, very exotic, a special kind of Pidgin German, only spoken in one part of the Bismark Archipel.

The magazin asked me to make a double-paged map of those former colonies. So I did it with prominent help of an ancient book, bougth years ago at a southgerman flee market: Rudolf Schmidt's Bayrischer Schulatlas, 1910.

Hi everybody!

It´s been quite a long time since my last blog post,

so let´s jump right in without further ado!

I´ve been designing the cover for the next issue

of Dolor Magazine, published by the nice

Michael Meier at Rotopol, which is about 90% finished.

I did a little cheesy Photoshop rendering of how

it might look like when it´s printed. I chose these

nice wooden planks as a background, so if you´re

going to spend a sunny day at a nice pond somewhere

it might end up looking exactly like in this picture.

Once this is out I´ll let you know right here!

Going from fake wood backgrounds to real wood backgrounds,

next up is my new sticker set which has just been released.

My mexian friend Inés, aka the one half of

Café con leche asked me if I wanted

to contribute to their fantastic line of stickers,

which, naturally, I did. You can check them

out as well as order them here.

I also started dipping my toes into other fields

of illustration, and because I can´t just draw

girls with tattoos all day long I decided to try

out some handlettering.

These are great fun and a good way for me to

stay busy even when I´m taking a break from

my bigger projects.

Me as a very small kid. Just thought I´d

throw that in here. I actually still have this wooden
toy snail, though the paint on its wheels is worn down.
I must have dragged this thing around with me for
quite some time.

Peking Hotel

000x planed its seventeens number "Peking Hotel".

I designed several postcards with a poem of Li Bo "Selbstvergessenheit"

or in general with the theme of peace and harmony.

The Swiss 000x- team chose a decorative motive.

Perhaps too many designers took the chance and present something political?

We will see in december.

The King of Cool

Barbara (former Minty) McQueen, has compiled a book about her time with husband Steve McQueen. The legendary actor, well known for a lot of popular movie classics like „The Magnificent Seven“, „Bulitt“, „The Getaway“ or „Papillon“ and his passion for any kind of motor-races, died 30 years ago. This report about his last years, living withdrawn together with his third wife Barbara in rural environment, offers some really new and unexpected views on the King Of Cool. In my opinion really „autumn-reading-stuff“.

I did two doublepaged illustrations, one as an intro the other at the end of the book. Today my free copies came by mail and I was very pleased about. Great bookdesign, rare photographies, fine printing.

The book is now out, published by Ankerherz under the title „Mein McQueen“.

Some new drawings for a humoristic book about occultism,

ill will and strange creatures include this fellow:

Historians assume that elephant skulls could be at the origin

of the cyclops legend. These skulls have a hole in the front,

at the place of the trunk (elephant nose). Due to a lack of

anatomy knowledge, this hole was maybe interpreted as

cavity of the eye...

Hello there! My mikrokosmos book tells a short
story about my "flathunt" in Hamburg.
Some of you already know St. Pauli, Altona,
Eimsbüttel, Wilhelmsburg and these other great
parts of town.

Flathunting (I was surprised by that term, very fitting
translation) in Hamburg can be like sightseeing,
but as in Munich, it can really be difficult.
People often search for weeks or months,
and finally stay in minuscule rooms because of the
frightfully high rents. (especially artists :)

I like this very special town with the impressive harbour,
spacious alleys and beautiful architecture,
Alster channels and the many 'alternative' districts,
not to forget the big illustrators scene.

Hamburg has a great energy.

On monday the books go to the printer - in Italy!

I managed to finish my Mikrokosmos book. :)

'Fingertips', a song by Stevie Wonder was the inspiration.

In the beginning I was struggling with the colours. But now,

I think it's quite nice to see the subject of Motown misicians

in red and blue colours. It's a totally different approach

than the black and white stuff I've done.

Hello. Me again.
In the past time I worked for a Berlin fashion-company called MICHALSKY. The first projekt they did with me was a work they did with the WWF for endagered species (like above the iberian Lynx). I made several motivs they print on shirts. As they now told me the shirts were delivered to the Michalsky-stores last week and they were all sold out at the first day. That is nice.
The next thing will be an allover-print, which is a rather big thing :) and makes me happy.

Freckles and Combs

I don´t just love to draw girls with tattoos,

I also love to draw girls with freckles, so here´s

a little summertime piece I did in one of my

notorious nightsessions. As usual, it turned out

completely different than I planned, and by "planned"

I mean "I just started drawing something and went

with whereever I was going with it". I´ve used color

a bit differently than I usually do - there´s a

background color now!

Hey, you know what? You can click

And here´s another double page I did in the last couple

of days. I call it "Kammhund", which is a terrible

pun on "Kampfhund". At first I was struggling a lot

with this piece, especially the head, but as usual for

me the ending phase really turned things around a lot.

It´s interesting how my initial drawing phases
look very weird, and I just keep working on it

until it looks like something useful, and after

quite some time I really tighten it up.
This usually means that I´m only really
happy with it in the last 10% of my time working
on it - especially since I´m obsessed with
details, and at least for me these little things
make a huge difference on the expression
of my drawings.

I feel that whenever I have a lot of projects going on

is when I´m the most productive and in turn

the happiest. I really enjoy working on these

things like a maniac, up to the point when I

don´t even mind sitting in front of a computer

screen when it´s perfect sunshine outside

(at least I can do some balcony breaks or

go riding my old rusty bike from time to time).
I guess that confirms my long-time suspicion
that I´m a huge nerd, but I guess myself
and everybody else already knew this
all along.

My newest drawing was inspired by a sepiacolored picture, shot in the early 20th century by famous photographer Edward S. Curtis, showing a native indian whalehunter. Apart from any romanticism I was especially fascinated by this grotesque looking detail of primitve (and surely Freudian) airbags.

A colored version of this image will be part of Claudias „Maybe“- postcardproject.

Oh! Sweet Nuthin' - Work in Progress

In the last days I‘ve tried to work on my participation for Boris‘ Mikrokosmos-project. I had a lot of ideas, some exiting small concepts but none of them worked really well... The solution out of this unsatisfying state came with „Oh! Sweet Nuthin'“ - a classical song written by Lou Reed and to hear on the Velvets highly recommended „Loaded“ album. This dark and soulful ode to laziness inspired me (ironically) for a series of illustrations in a sometimes nearly abstract style. Here are the uncolored and (as yet) unfinished doublepages 4/5 and 8/9.

Finally finished

Today I‘ve completed the last page of our long-time (God, we worked more than four years on this book!) comicproject based on Berlin stories written by Verena Postweiler. At least our book will include 50 stories on 64 pages (see also here and there).

The whole project has got a pretty experimental approach - people from established german comic publishers were quite irritated. They couldn‘t understand that our comic works without main characters, continual storyline and comic speech. They were even irritated by the occasional use of colored (instead of black) line-drawings!

In the next weeks we‘ve to design the book, not to forget to determine the real book-title. Hope everything will work well so that the book will be published in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair.

I just finished the illustration and the layout of a CD for the adorable Excrementory Grindfuckers. The title is "Headliner Of Hearts" and the band & I decided to incorporate some circus-/sideshow-/freaks-of nature-images accordingly. Beside the fact that this is a theme with great texture, plenty of images to research and a lot of fun to illustrate, there are quite a few philosophical questions involved. Hello,

new work from my illustrated dream diary, with some small layout improvements. A dream dated from 10.05.09 - exactly one year before the Fumetto Festival has taken place.

- some words about Fumetto -

First of all, this was a really exiting and interesting festival, with kindly organisation- and working-crews (I was also member of the working-crew). There were numerous well done exhibitions, with a lot of trivia about the shown artists. Especially I was impressed by the work of Chihoi Lee (from Hongkong) and Brecht Evens (Beligium), but less impressed how Brechts work was presented, in an otherwise perfect exhibition environment. It's a pity that his drawings were glued (without frames) directly on the wall. Some events like the awards or a drawing competition between Ben Jones and Brecht were also rather failed. The use of two badly prepared presenter, performing in a lurid TV-style, was not the best idea (not just in my opinion). But as a conclusion I‘ve to say, it was really worth to have been there - see you at the next festival!

PS: I met three artists, all from Berlin, at the festival which I appreciate very much. Gregor Hinz, currently based in Kiel, who has published a very funny travel diary via Leipzig publishing house „Die Bibliothek“. Great cartoonist Andy Leuenberger, with a fine exhibition at Fumetto (Metzgerhalle). And Juanita Keller - I like her work very much. Not to forget a very interesting projekt initially organized from Riga called „The Last Match“ - several artists work on small papers in size of a matchbox.

This new zine project explores the fascination and attraction

of this very ambivalent theme, with its primitive, magic,

absurd and often disgusting manifestations.

It's a zine that will change and evolve a lot

while in progress, I'm curious where it's gonna lead.

Typeface In The Making

Hi!

This is not really about illustration, but I think about book art anyway - I started making a typeface recently, a traditional serif font. A couple of years ago I really enjoyed making letters and would like to pick up this loose end. What you see above is the first set of letters without kerning pairs and not yet thoroughly checked. I am planning to make some basic styles and alternative shapes (whenever I find the time). Too bad good old Fontographer doesn’t really exist anymore, FontLab is SO much more complex to learn.
