Finally finished

Today I‘ve completed the last page of our long-time (God, we worked more than four years on this book!) comicproject based on Berlin stories written by Verena Postweiler. At least our book will include 50 stories on 64 pages (see also here and there).

The whole project has got a pretty experimental approach - people from established german comic publishers were quite irritated. They couldn‘t understand that our comic works without main characters, continual storyline and comic speech. They were even irritated by the occasional use of colored (instead of black) line-drawings!

In the next weeks we‘ve to design the book, not to forget to determine the real book-title. Hope everything will work well so that the book will be published in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Headliner Of Hearts

····· Click to enlarge ·····

Hi there!

I just finished the illustration and the layout of a CD for the adorable Excrementory Grindfuckers. The title is "Headliner Of Hearts" and the band & I decided to incorporate some circus-/sideshow-/freaks-of nature-images accordingly. Beside the fact that this is a theme with great texture, plenty of images to research and a lot of fun to illustrate, there are quite a few philosophical questions involved. If you are interested in topics like that, I highly recommend Tod Brownings »Freaks«.

Have a great day,
Peter

WOMEN at WORK

Hi  everyone,

Here some pics of the opening of exposition Women at Work.
It was a succes and a nice introduction for Poste Aérienne.
Hopefully we can do a bigger project in Antwerp for PA in the future.

Fumetto

Hello,

new work from my illustrated dream diary, with some small layout improvements. A dream dated from 10.05.09 - exactly one year before the Fumetto Festival has taken place.

- some words about Fumetto -

First of all, this was a really exiting and interesting festival, with kindly organisation- and working-crews (I was also member of the working-crew). There were numerous well done exhibitions, with a lot of trivia about the shown artists. Especially I was impressed by the work of Chihoi Lee (from Hongkong) and Brecht Evens (Beligium), but less impressed how Brechts work was presented, in an otherwise perfect exhibition environment. It's a pity that his drawings were glued (without frames) directly on the wall. Some events like the awards or a drawing competition between Ben Jones and Brecht were also rather failed. The use of two badly prepared presenter, performing in a lurid TV-style, was not the best idea (not just in my opinion). But as a conclusion I‘ve to say, it was really worth to have been there - see you at the next festival!

Thanks a lot to the Fumetto Crew

- Adrian

PS: I met three artists, all from Berlin, at the festival which I appreciate very much. Gregor Hinz, currently based in Kiel, who has published a very funny travel diary via Leipzig publishing house „Die Bibliothek“. Great cartoonist Andy Leuenberger, with a fine exhibition at Fumetto (Metzgerhalle). And Juanita Keller - I like her work very much. Not to forget a very interesting projekt initially organized from Riga called „The Last Match“ - several artists work on small papers in size of a matchbox.

the hunters of the Stone Age to the highly equipped special
forces of our days. Today they remain a hidden and transformed
aspect of society and modern life.
This new zine project explores the fascination and attraction
of this very ambivalent theme, with its primitive, magic,
absurd and often disgusting manifestations.

It's a zine that will change and evolve a lot
while in progress, I'm curious where it's gonna lead.

Du-Magazin #806

This month famous swiss magazin „Du“ circle around a pretty helvetian topic - the Alps. I contributed with an illustration in proven „Laika“-mode.

By the way, I really enjoyed the subtle ironic but also melancholic tone of Tobias Müllers text.

Typeface In The Making

····· Click to enlarge ·····

Hi!

This is not really about illustration, but I think about book art anyway - I started making a typeface recently, a traditional serif font. A couple of years ago I really enjoyed making letters and would like to pick up this loose end. What you see above is the first set of letters without kerning pairs and not yet thoroughly checked. I am planning to make some basic styles and alternative shapes (whenever I find the time). Too bad good old Fontographer doesn’t really exist anymore, FontLab is SO much more complex to learn.

Cheers,
Peter

Sketches April

····· Click to enlarge ·····

Hi!

I’ve been doing these drawings for the last weeks - every morning one of them, before work. This time I paid more attention to the negative spaces than to the actual outline of the motives, e.g. little shadows and things like that. Somehow this way of perception feels good and I like how it changes my drawing-process.

Best,
Peter

Here's one of some new b/w drawings, maybe for a new
encyclopedia or another book in the same format.

btw. I'm very happy that some of my encyclopedias will soon
be distributed by Last Gasp (San Francisco).

Hidden Rabbitfish

I'm back from Egypt.
It wasn't a long journey and I didn't see Kairo or a pyramid like
Gertrude Bell or Amelia Edwards (1877).

But now I'm an open water diver and did my first step in the sea world.

Pergamonmuseum Berlin

The quest for ancient buildings and mysterious treasures, dark looking Arabians and bearded (but always well fashioned) European Aristocrats, steamblowing railways and the dust of endless deserts are the right stuff for nostalgic oriental adventures. To connect a vintage illustrationstyle with archaeological issues was a pretty fine idea of Berlin based design-agency Poliform. In the last month we worked together on a poster-competition for the forthcoming exhibition „Tell Halaf“, which will show a collection of immemorial sculptures from the Near East.

I‘m sorry to say that the Pergamonmuseum decided at least for another, I presume more conservative and likely boring, design. Nevertheless here‘s our work, typo and design by Poliform.

How I Work

(click for fullsize glory!)

While I was working on a contribution
for the small (small in the literal sense, it´s only
10x10cm) comic anthology "Aua! Aua! Heiß! Heiß!"
I took a screenshot and somehow lost a good 15 minutes
on turning it into a nice little map on how I work.

Yeah, it´s definitely not as interesting as showing
a desk filled with brushes, colors and papers,
(there´s just random nonsense lying on my actual desk
right now, as well as around 1000 empty tea cups)
but that´s the downside of working digitally ;)

Hope you enjoy it!
Cheers,

Wallpaper

Hello !
Well I rented an atelier. I used the first time just to do a work, in which I could get in touch with materials again. What a pleasure to feel the papers and to mess around in bigger size, far off any computer. Well the subject, good old Childhood-Dirty Harry Callahan suited fine in this playing.. It has already found its way to a new happy owner.
I will give it more time for PA Projects now. With love from IB

Hi,
Here's an update from the things I'm doing right now!
I discovered screen printing and I'm really into it!
These are pictures of some prints I've made in
the printmaking atelier in Antwerp.
I'll show them on the Women at work expo in June,
combined with more designs of 45 single album covers.

greetz and happy Easter!

Side Project II

Greetings!

This is another row of non-objective drawings I made alongside some design-commissions. Although they feel a bit overdone to me, I like the Deathstar-/aerial view-vibe about it. And it is harder than I thought to draw a few circles without making them look like a face.

Warm regards,
Peter
