Food

This are a few pages of my mikrokosmos booklet, for the third edition. I think the topic is clear :) It's going about food. I look foreward to see it printed.

Latest work

... this depressive dinosaur/monster is one of the last drawings for the booklet. I'm currently starting to do the texts.

I'm just coming back from Hamburg, if there's an oppurtunity, have a look at the very nice zine and artist-book assortment of the DRUCKDEALER

Wild Children

Mystic figures like "monkey boys", "wolf girls", or "gazelle boys" for example are all part of the lore of wild children. Those feral children have grown up with little or no human contact, and they are therefore unaware of human social behavior or language.

All over the world, all though history the stories about those cases are secretive and fascinating.

T.C. Boyle wrote in one of his last books about the story of Victor of Aveyron in France, 1799. And even the well known 200 year old drama of Kaspar Hauser is deeply interesting me. So again by way of trial I started some illustrations.

Mugshots

Here's a selection of mugshots I have been making during the past 37 weeks for the magazine Knack Focus. Every week they published an article about a famous individual from the cultural scene, which has been in contact with the court of justice.

Poste Aérienne at MEAKUSMA

live drawing event with Boris Servais and Adrian Wylezol at invitation of Mea Kusma, Alter Schlachthof, Eupen (BE)

It was a cool experience to see our small-size ink, pen and crayon drawings projected on this impressive big wall, with the sounds of Sohrab, Innercity and Midnight Opera.

We were hooked very quickly, we both have forgotten time and
we're pretty sure that we'll do events like this again.

Big thanks to Christophe and Michael from Mea Kusma,
the artists and everybody else - it was great!

A Growing Mountain Of... Stuff.

I´ve been doing a lot of editorial work in the past
weeks. Above is a piece for the business section of
DIE ZEIT, on the topic of whether or not we
need the old economist ideas.

Here´s one from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung
about how a lot of people can have very risky hobbies yet tend
to be very cautious when it comes to planning their
finances.

And to balance things out a little:

Some skeletons! I hope I will be able to do more personal
work in the future again, but I also really enjoy
doing editorial illustration.

Cheers,
Frederik

illu12 ⋄ Illustratoren Festival

Welcome to the biggest rhineland festival of illustration to date!!

illu12 takes place in Cologne the coming weekend, from 20th-22nd of April in DQE. 43 exhibitors from Cologne and NRW show their work and reveal details of their creative process. Wether you're illustrator, art lover or creative professional, make sure to drop by, it's a fine opportunity to meet artists and chat about their work.

Boris Servais talks about the phenomenon of "alternative illustration" on Saturday, 16h. The example of three contemporary artists, Henrik Drescher, Benoît Jacques and Barron Storey, offers insights in their unique working techniques in the scene of independent illustration.

The programm of events includes workshops, discussion forums and live drawing. One of the contributors for our coming Mikrokosmos Edition, Lars Henkel, designed the key-visual for the festival, an hommage to Maurice Sendaks Where the Wild Things are.

Home Sweet Home

The Atelierhaus Salzamt Linz called to design a postcard according to the topic "Home Sweet Home" for the NEXTCOMIC-Festival 2012. Accepted techniques were painting, drawing, comics, illustration and collage. All submitted postcards take part in the exhibition "Home Sweet Home - drawing, houses and postcards" in the Atelierhaus Salzamt from March 15th till April 30th 2012.

One hundred international motives are shown in a small full color catalogue.

Collage - Sites of Crime

There are two sites of crime with different use of physical strength, that are bound to occur in format vary.
While the first, C.Pom still acts as a "deskperson", Ib Jorn deals with "Wrestling-Power" since a few months. He fights a glorious battle of materials with great show of strength!

sketchbook

I started some time ago, to take a sketchbook with me to make some doodles and sketches of people and objects while waiting. I like really like to use the blue and red pencils. They give another feeling while drawing on the paper, compared to the regular pencils.

Thumbs up, thumbs down

I´ve been doing some editorial work in the past year, and this
piece for an article about US rating agencies and the whole
Greece problem for DIE ZEIT is the latest one I did.

I really love how they worked the illustration into
the layout. I enjoy doing editorial work a lot
because of the snappy deadlines and the
specific connection a drawing has with
the text. You get a call, and a couple
of days and a few calls and emails later
you can see the piece on newsstands all
across the country. A very satisfying way
to work!

Fragments

Hello dear PA-ers,

it has been a longer time since I came with some drawings.
These are some pictures from my ›work in progress‹ in hells kitchen. At the moment I work around with collages from parts of my pencil drawings which I`ve cutted to pieces before, what looks weird sometimes..

On the other hand I fight with coloured papers I rip off walls in the street, what came to some rather abstract results.

Finally I try to combine these. This is, due to the d
ifferent materials, difficult.
But I keep on trying and bring more details to our blogg soon.
Hope to see and hear from you soon.

Portraits & New Work

Some of the things on which I'm working this year. This is one of the originals for the monsters book, that are probably gonna be exhibited in Hamburg at the invitation of GUI-GUI end of the year.

The portrait is the first in a new series of drawings about imaginary beeings, some kind of 'fantasy' portraits if you like.

I'd like to make an exhibition next year in my native East Belgian city Eupen, although time is very short. I hope it's gonna be possible.

It is ink drawings with an acrylic 'wash' - watercolor painting.

Cheers, Boris Servais

THE INIMITABLE DICKENS

This year 2012 the world of literature is celebrating the great english novelist, Charles Dickens' 200th birthday. Although it is February for me it will take the whole year to comment all the interesting news about this inimitable person. "Drood" written by Dan Simmons seems for me a book worth reading. In his novel  life and work of Dickens are woven together very well.

Greetings,
C.Pom
